When handicapping a race, some bettors have a strong idea of where a particular horse will finish, along with a general sense of which others might compete for the win. When reasonably confident a horse will finish second, with one or two others competing to win, a bettor can place a wheel bet, wagering that one horse finishes second while two others finish in the top three in any order. A bettor might also wager that a specific horse finishes first and that another finishes in either second or third. If that happens, the bettor collects at relatively high odds. The wheel comes in especially handy with a trifecta wheel, where a favored horse is picked to win and two others are chosen simply to finish somewhere in second or third.
