The best indicator of fitness is a horse that runs every two or three weeks at area tracks. Such horses are generally in good physical condition and have the stamina to finish strong in longer races. Because it has raced regularly over the past several months, bettors can be confident the horse is in good shape. Running only two or three races a month also gives the horse time to rest properly and recover from any post race soreness while allowing for additional training. Most racing forms include a Layoff Line showing whether a horse has been away from racing for more than forty five days. Such horses likely need a few races to return to top form. Recent workouts and the trainer in charge of them should also be listed and can help determine whether a horse is well trained and in good shape or should be avoided.
