After graduating from claiming races, horses run in allowance races, which carry larger purses and feature horses that are not for sale. Allowance races have preset conditions under which they are run, including the weights horses may carry. Weights help level the field, giving weaker horses a chance to win while slowing down heavy favorites. The host track’s race secretary determines how much weight each horse carries. Most horses running in allowance races have not yet won anything beyond lower level Maiden, Claiming, or Starter races and are chasing their first Allowance win. A horse might have a string of wins at the lower levels, but without an Allowance win, it will not move up to the next level.
