While front runners and stalkers generally like to stay at or near the front of the pack, which leaves them susceptible to tiring late, closers usually stay near the back and run a more strategic race. Closers and their jockeys let other horses run faster and harder early on, then slowly move up as the finish nears. Closers are often seen charging hard from behind on the outside, winning by several lengths as the front runners and stalkers fade. Closers generally do better toward the outside, where they cannot be boxed in against the rail. Starting on the inside near the rail can make it harder for a closer to find a clear lane, which is why they most often make their move from the outside when they finish in the money.
