Front-Runners Treat Races Like Sprints

By September 6, 2026Horse Racing

A horse that likes to be at or near the front of the pack, often competing for the lead early in a race, is known as a front runner. Front runners typically start out very strong and can finish well if they are in excellent shape, and tracking their recent workouts and race results can help determine whether they are in good condition or possibly recovering from an injury. Front runners tend to do best in races where they are the only front runner and can build a large early lead, finishing well ahead of the pack. When challenged by other front runners, they may push themselves too hard early and fade at the end as they tire. Shorter races often suit front runners well, though in excellent shape, they can also do well in longer events.
