Predicting that a horse will win, place, or show, and then wheeling the rest of the field, guarantees a winning ticket if the key horse finishes in the predicted position. Laying such a bet can be risky, with the potential to lose a good deal of money if the key horse does not come through. But when the key horse finishes as predicted, a trifecta wheel can pay off far better than simply laying a straight bet at the horse’s own odds. If a race has nineteen horses, there are fifty six possible outcomes for a trifecta involving that key horse. Instead of laying one hundred twelve dollars to cover every combination, a bettor can lay a one dollar wheel for fifty six dollars. If the key horse finishes in the right position and the other two come in at long odds, the payoff can be substantial.
